I finally took what was a much needed rest day yesterday, I hadn’t taken one since last Monday and my body had been trying to subtly let me know “Hey, guess what - you need to take some time to just kick back a little bit - a day off once in a while won’t kill you, it’ll actually help you!”

Wednesday it kicked the message into high gear and it finally sunk in - take a day off or else. It actually ended up working out better with my schedule for this crazy week, taking off some of the stress of when I was going to find the time to do X, Y and Z without cloning myself.

So I had rescheduled my training session for tonight, and it felt great. I’ve been working on building core strength and strengthening my legs and correcting any imbalances - I’m really starting to see the pay off in general strength but also during my runs.

I have a 5K tomorrow morning which I am looking forward to. Hoping to take some time off my run in January, and shooting for around 25 minutes. I definitely learned a HUGE lesson during my 15K a couple of weeks ago of going out slower than you think you should, so I’m going to try that tomorrow morning and see how that impacts a shorter distance.

After a long week, I am definitely glad it is Friday! :)

This week is my stepback week, back off on my week’s total mileage and then start increasing my total mileage again next week. It was supposed to be last week but I decided with the 5K this weekend I’d move it to this week so that I could be a little more rested for it, not worry about getting in the rest of my mileage this weekend, and it simply made more sense.

I’ve noticed at times that I’ve been somewhat down on myself for where I am, so I thought I’d also use this week to ’step back’ and look at what I’ve accomplished. Running is a new sport for me, and it has taken some adjustment to ‘get’ what it is all about. Coming from a swimming background there were some paradigm shifts that needed to get made, and I think that is coming along.

Six months ago I made the commitment to be healthier and that started with quitting smoking (which I now can’t even believe I ever did). I started really working towards a goal running wise a couple of months ago. I’m proud that I have stuck with it and I can see myself improving every week.

I’m going to keep working towards my goals and think that maybe I’ll make a reflection of where I am a regular part of my stepback weeks.
